Established in 1972, Bay Tree Lakes is a one-of-a-kind lakefront community. A precious few families have gathered at Bay Tree Lakes for more than three decades. The developers have taken a careful approach to developing the community through the years. About half the 160 homes have full-time residents. The other half get here as often as they can. The developers partner with the residents to ensure the preservation of the community's original identity.
Bay Tree Lake and Horsepen Lake, the two natural freshwater lakes that anchor the community, are part of the unique regional topography commonly referred to as "Carolina Bays." One visit to the property and you'll quickly understand the name as picturesque bay trees appear naturally throughout the community and along roadsides. Competing scientific theories speculate that the lakes were formed by meteor showers or icebergs thousands of years ago, although the exact origins of the lakes' unique, perfectly oval shapes are still unknown. Native American tribes are known to have hunted and fished at Bay Tree Lake, the Horsepen Lake and surrounding area. Settlement in Bladen County and this lower Cape Fear region dates back to our nation's very beginning.
